Author Bio

Anthony Harkness only recently discovered that writing about boyhood adventures in Maroubra was a lot more fun than writing policy documents and compliance procedures for educational authorities. Holding degrees in economics, education and theology partly explains his fascination with the sweet mysteries of life and budgetary spreadsheets. His first poem about 'wine wisdom' led him to the national finals of the 2021 Spoken Word Competition. Just a South Sydney Lad is his first novel. He lives with Shelley, his artistic muse, painter and partner on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. If he's not trying to break ninety in a round of golf, he is trying to work out who was the better band - The Moody Blues or Supertramp?

Against the backdrop of the sixties, when British music invaded Sydney streets and TV colonised loungerooms, a Maroubra boy cut his teeth living every experience to the fullest…

Jump aboard the everyday adventures of a Maroubra boy in 1950s and 60s Australia where Sunday Mass, getting on the punt and sitting on the hill for the match of the day at the SCG was a holy trifecta.

Despite fears of floggings by teachers, schools suspiciously burning down, headless chooks running about a backyard, being conscripted for military service in Vietnam, or missing selection in the school’s under-11 A-grade cricket team, Maroubra held plenty of magic for a generation.

As he revisits the memories of his youth, Anthony will tell you exactly why he’s just a South Sydney lad!

'Comically authentic in its humble and whimsical depiction of life in the outer Sydney suburbs. A wonderfully fresh read.' Donna, Readalot reviewer
